Red and green numbers kept flickering on a presentation screen as five brothers pointed out credit-card debt, consumer debt, mortgage debt and a ballooning national debt as their father tried to explain why it's patriotic to file for bankruptcy.

These are the Doans, a family of bankruptcy lawyers who built their Doan Law Firm from scratch more than a decade ago and now have 12 offices in Orange and San Diego counties and the Inland Empire, with a 13th scheduled to open this month in Los Angeles.

Greg Doan, the family patriarch and founder of this dad-and-five-sons-firm, took the Court's message as a call to action, saying, "There are many families in our local communities that struggle just to make ends meet. This isn't a very 'merry' time for a lot of moms and dads, and especially those individuals who have been unemployed for much of 2009. Our family decided to do something special this Christmas season and give back to the community in which we grew up, raised our families, and built our business."

"Carrying debt is like carrying a backpack full of bricks," says James Doan, a bankruptcy attorney in San Clemente, Calif. "It weighs people down. They feel like failures. The are embarrassed and ashamed."

"Judges are becoming increasingly impatient with plaintiffs who produce no more proof of ownership than a lost-note affidavit or a copy of the note," said Michael Doan, an attorney at Doan Law Firm LLP in Carlsbad, California.

"Things are heating up," Doan said.
